Annual Lecture and AGM - The Black Death, Hampshire and Beyond
Date: Friday 22nd November 2024
Venue: Hampshire Record Office, Sussex Street, Winchester, SO23 8TH
Stalwarts of the Hampshire Field Club, the late George Watts and Edward Roberts discovered new evidence and new perspectives on the Black Death in Hampshire through evidence from maonorial accounts and buildings. They inspired Dr Paula Arthur's detailed and frightening analysis of the devastating impact of plague on the Bishop of Winchester's estates. Her work has been published as a chapter, The Black Death and Mortality: A Reassessment, in the book edited by Christopher Given-Wilson: Fourteenth Century England VI (2010).
Following the 650th anniversary of the Black Death, drawing on a wide range of documentary material, Hampshire's experience was reviewed in the short and longer terms.
