'Geology and habitats of Passfield Common and Conford Moor'

Coppiced woodland on Passfield Common

Coppiced woodland in Passfield Common.

Programme:

  • 10.15 for 10.30 Park/meet near Conford Village Hall, Conford, Liphook, GU30 7QW. Grid ref SU8240 3303, What3words: ///slogans.performed.fuse.

  • 10.30 - 13.00 Chris Webb gave an introduction followed by a guided walk through Conford and Conford Moor. Conford Moor forms an ancient common on the edge of Woolmer Forest. The Lower Greensand geology and hydrology, with the historic exercise of common rights, have combined to create a mosaic of habitats ranging from wood pasture to heathland and fen. Approx 1.5 miles, all flat, possibly wet in the fen area if there’s been a lot of rain. Surfaces will include uneven footpaths, tracks and roads.

  • Passfield Common is a stunning small wood and common area (Woodland Trust website). Conford Moor is made up of areas of fen, wet heathland, acid grassland and stands of ancient alder carr. Due to the hydrology and geology of the land and its historic management, it is a site of great ecological interest. (NT website).
