Celebrating Hampshire HistoriansHockey, Stanley Frederick1906 - 1988Dom Hockey belonged to Quarr Abbey, a Catholic Benedictine monastery between Binstead and Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight. It is close to a quarry that in the middle ages supplied ‘Binstead stone’ for the Tower of London, Winchester Cathedral, Romsey Abbey and other churches. It was almost depleted by the end of the middle ages, but remained in use until the late 1880s and was briefly reopened in 1912. Amongst Hockey’s many works is Quarr Abbey and its Lands, 1132-1631 (Leicester University Press, 1970). He also published several books based on his studies of the records of Beaulieu Abbey and edited a volume of episcopal records for the HRO. He was active at Quarr Abbey from at least 1956 (HRO, TOP359/3/1) Sources
