Celebrating Hampshire HistoriansHill, Arthur Norman1863 - 1944Norman Hill was born in London. Trained as a solicitor, he became a senior partner in the Liverpool firm Hill, Dickinson & Co, specializing in shipping. In 1899 he married Ellen Mary Stratford - they had one son (Norman Gray Hill) and three daughters, one of whom was Rosalind Hill. In the early 20th century Hill was a principal advisor to the Government on maritime matters. He was knighted in 1911 and created baronet (of Green Place, Stockbridge) in 1919. A land purchase he made in 1920 was conditional on his taking on the manor of Stockbridge and he spent the rest of his life researching its history and restoring its rights. Among Hill’s correspondents were W J Andrew, Arthur Bennett and R H Hodgkinson, and his researchers were Lucy Druckler and Margaret Burton. The ‘Hill of Stockbridge’ papers (87M97) in the HRO include research into the customs and regulations of the Borough, place names and boundaries, a draft history of Stockbridge, notes about Stockbridge MPs and much else besides.
