President's Lecture

Andy Russel, Archaeology Unit Southampton City Council, will speak on:

“Hung in Chains: A late Saxon execution cemetery at Oliver’s Battery, Winchester”

Andy will describe the excavation, originally a watching brief, of a Bronze Age barrow which had been used for later, Medieval, burials. The nature of these burials tells a story of late Saxon/early Norman punishment and execution with chilling evidence of the methods used.

Andy explores what this evidence tells us about the locations and meaning of execution places at Hampshire sites.
